FEATURED ITEM: Handmade Athabaskan Beaded Baby Belt

These belts were made to carry a baby on the backs of their mothers under a shawl. The belt goes around the front of the mother, over her shoulder(s) and under the baby's bum to make a snug "seat" for the baby to sit in. There's a few different ways the belts are worn - traditional and a side-sling style. After the baby grows out of the being-carried-everywhere stage - the belt is hung as a keepsake in the family home. This is my first belt. It is mounted on really thick smoked moosehide and sewn in all size 11 seed beads. I designed the flower patterns myself. The finishing is regular synthetic yarn and brass crow beads with moose straps. It is currently on display at the Two Spirits Gallery in downtown Anchorage, Alaska.
